Power utility Eskom has, through the signing of a memorandum of collaboration (MoC), signalled its intent to collaborate with automotive company BYD Auto South Africa in future and to support the launch of the BYD Dolphin Surf electric vehicle (EV) in South Africa.

Under the terms of the MoC, Eskom and BYD will explore ways to support South Africa's drive to decarbonise transport and position the country as a hub for EV adoption; the potential expansion of public charging infrastructure in key locations across the country; and opportunities for local skills development, participation by small, medium-sized and microenterprises and job creation in the EV ecosystem.

Future discussions may also consider renewables-powered ultrafast charging hubs; recycling and repurposing used EV batteries for energy storage and backup systems; and integrating EVs into Eskom’s demand-side management strategies to help balance electricity supply and demand.

Eskom earlier this month introduced 20 EVs to its vehicle fleet, along with 10 charging stations for internal use. It wants to extend the adoption of EVs to the public.

“Having successfully rolled out EVs within our fleet on September 9, we are ready to enable wider adoption by bringing practical and accessible charging infrastructure to South Africans.

“Eskom is driving into a cleaner future, not only through our investments in renewable energy and sustainable technologies, but also by enabling affordable and innovative mobility solutions for South Africans,” says acting Eskom group executive for distribution Agnes Mlambo.
